British Empire Medal ( B E M ) Civil - George V - Awarded to: C/JX 265929 - Able Seaman / Gunner - Robert Frank Parker - Merchant Navy/ Royal Navy - London Gazette date: 31st March 1942 - SS Sturdee Rose The ship was sailing alone when she was attacked by aircraft. All hands were called on deckand the guns were manned. By clever seamanship the Master put his ship's head on the aircraft. The Gunners held their fire until the enemy was over the fore castle. They then opened such a devastating barrage that the aircraft swerved, dived, hit the water about four yards from the ship and sank.Smoke was seen coming from a ventilator. The Chief Engineer and the Boatswain removed the hatch covers and at great personal risk, searched amongst the cargo until incendiary bombs were found and isolated. The Master's defence and the cool and efficient behaviour of the whole company accounted for a German aircraft and saved the ship. Single medal mounted to wear, with pin clasp. Born: Canterbury,Kent.
